Someone was arrested in Toronto tonight: where they are and what happens next

In Toronto, a person held for bail is usually taken to the police division where they were booked, then brought to bail court — in person or by video — at 10 Armoury Street or Old City Hall, seven days a week.

Finding out where they are

Call the division you think arrested them (Toronto Police divisions are numbered — 14, 31, 42, 51 and so on). Ask if the person is in custody and whether they are being held for bail. Police will not always tell you much. The lawyer's office often can find out faster. [verify]

Where the hearing happens

Getting there and getting in

Bail court starts early. If you are the surety, be there before it starts, with ID and proof of address. Phones off in the courtroom. You may wait hours; the list is long.
